American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce Dictionary
Project
Invitation For Sponsorship
January 2003

v TO FRIENDS OF INDONESIA

The American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (AICC) is pleased to spearhead the production of a much needed business and communications tool: A Comprehensive Indonesian-English Dictionary.

The Dictionary will facilitate better understanding of Indonesia and its people by countless companies and individuals. Recognizing that the English speaking world has a long term association with Indonesia, the AICC has focused its efforts to realize this dictionary as a symbol of that relationship.

Please join our commitment to the US-Indonesia partnership and to improving the quality of communication between Indonesians and English-speaking peoples through your sponsorship of American Indonesian Chamber of Commerce Dictionary Project. AICC seeks your support to defray publishing costs and make this important business tool available to public and private professionals worldwide.

v OVERVIEW

In June 2001, AICC was approached by member, Dr. Alan Stevens, a professional translator and linguistics professor at City University of NY, for help in publishing his lifes work, a comprehensive Indonesian-English dictionary completed with his late Indonesian colleague, A. Schmidgall-Tellings. The last dictionary of this kind was published 30 years ago and has not been updated since.

Indonesian, especially in areas of politics, economics, engineering and civil-society,
is a rapidly-changing language which makes the up-to-date, all inclusive content of
this AICC sponsored Dictionary all the more important. Virtually every professional in the field knows the major existing dictionaries are behind the times (certainly pre Net), incomplete, and filled with "made up" examples that don't fit actual usage.

With this in mind, Ohio University Press, an academic press, joined forces with AICC
to publish Stevenss work.

Scholarly publishing is subsidized publishing, advises the Press director, David Sanders. More specifically, in the case of this Indonesian-to-English dictionary
we feel sure of its academic merit but the economic risk is hard to predict. In
order to make the dictionary available at a reasonable list price, in a reasonable amount of time, and produce it with the high editorial and production values people expect from a university press, we must seek outside support.

The dictionary has been completed and is currently being edited.
