13 Hon. Robert Gelbard, US Ambassador to Indonesia 1999-2001
After his arrival in September
1999, Ambassador Gelbard's frank comments soon resounded in Indonesia's newly
free press and were catalytic to struggles within Indonesia's political
elite. However, he was first and foremost an advocate for the security of
Americans and their business and tirelessly promoted issues of contract
sanctity, the rule of law, transparency, and
justice. Ambassador Gelbard's views on developments
in Indonesia, buffeted as they are from his unique access to information and
intelligence as well diplomatic experiences that took him to other nations in
transition, may challenge conventional wisdom about Indonesia. I
think it is vital that we all make ourselves available to hear him.
