'Syariah' to be introduced gradually in Aceh

The implementation of Islamic law or Syariah in Aceh province will not rock the country's existing legal system, according to observers.

Dahlan, the dean of the school of law at Syah Kuala University in Banda Aceh said on Friday that the status of legal institutions and their daily activities would not change. According to Dahlan, formulating bylaws will take time. "Therefore the implementation of syariah will be gradual, parallel with the development of the Acehnese people, said Dahlan. "It would be impossible for the people to adapt the syariah drastically." JP January 5, 2002

Ibra’s Legal Woes

JAKARTA, Jan. 18 (AFX-ASIA) - Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA) head I Putu Gede Ary Suta said the agency's record in carrying out successful litigation against large debtors in the last three-and-half years has been poor. He said IBRA has processed 2,400 litigation cases in the last three-and-a-half years, of which 2,125 cases were through the civil courts while 68 cases were brought to the bankruptcy court. Of the total, only 230 were settled, with "IBRA mostly on the losing side, " he said.

Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dorodjatun Kuntjoro-Jakti said IBRA's litigation process has had "nil" impact.
